aus: The Washington Post online: WASHINGTON IN BRIEF Tuesday, May 22, 2001; Page A10 Immigrants' Deadline Extended The House voted 336 to 43 to extend by four months the deadline for undocumented immigrants to apply for visas while in the United States, but the Bush administration said it would support more time than that. An estimated 640,000 immigrants who were in the country on or before last Dec. 21 were eligible to apply for visas by April 30 without returning to their home nations. They had to be spouses or relatives of U.S. citizens, or legal residents or employees sponsored by employers. Kevin Rooney, acting commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, told Congress earlier this month that the agency favors an extension of six to 12 months. |
